Today’s Spanish word of the day is “adentro”.
It’s an adverb meaning “inside”, “in”, “inward” or “indoors”.
The structure [place] + “adentro” can be used to describe movement deeper into a place, for example:
- Vamos mar adentro – Let’s go out to sea (literally “sea inward”).
- El tesoro está tierra adentro – The treasure is inland.
- Los exploradores desaparecieron selva adentro – The explorers disappeared into the jungle (literally “jungle inward”).
- El tráfico empeora ciudad adentro. – Traffic gets worse further into the city.
The word “dentro” is formed by adding the preposition “a” (“to”) to the word “dentro” (“inside”). Therefore, it literally means something like “to the inside”.
