Buscar

Today’s Spanish word of the day is “buscar”.

It’s a verb meaning “to look for” or “to seek”. It can also mean “to search” in the context of searching the internet, or “to look up” in the context of using a catalog or dictionary.

The word “buscar” is thought to come from an old Celtic word resembling boudi meaning “profit” or “victory”—something most of us are looking for in some way or another! The ancient British queen Boudica who led a revolt against the Romans took her name from this Celtic word. Boudica literally meant “Victorious One” or “Victorious Woman”. This word survives in modern Welsh budd (“profit”).

A few Spanish words that are related to “buscar” include the feminine noun “búsqueda” (“search”) and the masculine noun buscador (“seeker” or “search engine”).

“Buscar” is a regular verb that has the same conjugation pattern as other regular -ar verbs.
