Derecho

Derecho

Today’s Spanish word of the day is “derecho”.

It can be used as a masculine noun meaning “law” or “right”, or as an adjective or adverb meaning “right”, “straight” or “upright”.

The word “derecho” comes from Latin directus from the verb dirigere meaning “to set straight”.

Estudié derecho… pero ahora me dedico a la cría de alpacas.

I studied law… but now I breed alpacas.

Mantén la espalda derecha.

Tengo derecho a comer pastel a cualquier hora del día.

I have the right to eat cake at any time of day.
