Today’s Spanish word of the day is “presidente” in the masculine form, or “presidenta” in the feminine form.

The word “president/a” comes from the the Latin verb praesidere, meaning “to preside” (“to act as head or chief”). This is also the root of the English words “preside” and “president”.

Fue elegida presidenta del club.

She was elected president of the club.

El presidente habló sobre la economía.

The president spoke about the economy.

México ha tenido 66 presidentes desde su independencia

Mexico has had 66 presidents since its independence.
