Ropa

Ropa

Today’s Spanish word of the day is “ropa”.

It’s a feminine noun meaning “clothes” or “clothing”.

It’s related to the English word “robe”, and originally came from an ancient Germanic word meaning “booty” or “plunder”, from which we also get the word “rob” in English. It’s assumed the word acquired the meaning “clothes” (or “robe” in English) because ancient Germanic tribes took fine clothes from the people they defeated in battle!

Necesito comprar ropa nueva.

I need to buy new clothes.

La ropa está en el armario.

The clothes are in the closet.

¡Jamás volveré a ponerme esa ropa!

I will never wear those clothes again!
