Luz

Luz

Today’s Spanish word of the day is “luz”.

It’s a feminine noun meaning “light”. It can refer to both the physical phenomenon of visible light as well as lamps and other devices used to produce it artificially.

In Spanish-speaking countries, the word “luz” is also used to refer to the electricity or power supply, even though elecricity is used for lots of things besides lighting. For example, to say there was a power cut you could say “se fue la luz” (literally “the light went”).

La luz del sol es muy brillante hoy.

The sunlight is very bright today.

Por favor, apaga la luz antes de salir.

Please turn off the light before leaving.

Esta bombilla da muy poca luz.

This bulb gives very little light.
